This will be commonly used when discussing Unreal Engine for various reasons.

  1. a user may have installed in a different place on their hard drive
  2. something might apply to several games

On the Unreal Wiki we write {Base Directory} to mean "the base directory of the game you're currently working with". As an example of how you you'll see this used:

{Base Directory}\System
{Base Directory}\Maps
